Chase Elliott charged his way from the rear of the field into the top 15 at Pocono Raceway before a flat right-front tire sent the No. 9 Chevrolet into the outside wall on Lap 84. The resulting damage left Elliott with a 38th-place finish.
After an accident in opening practice on Saturday sent the No. 9 team to a backup car, Elliott started from the rear of the field on Sunday afternoon.
When the green flag waved, Elliott looked to make up ground. By Lap 25, he had already worked his way into the top 20. Soon after, he made a scheduled green-flag pit stop for right-side tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment. The No. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS driver was up to 14th when the green checkered flag waved to end Stage 1.
During the stage break, the NAPA team elected to bring Elliott back to pit road for four fresh tires and fuel. He lined up 22nd for the ensuing restart, but quickly made his way up to 15th. On Lap 60, the 23-year-old driver was knocking on the door of the top ten. At Lap 72, he had climbed to seventh.
On Lap 84, a flat right-front tire sent Elliott’s No. 9 Chevrolet into the outside wall in Turn 3. The damage was severe enough to end the No. 9 team’s day with a 38th-place finish.
