Sunday afternoon, the NASCAR Cup Series field took the green flag for the prestigious DAYTONA 500, with Chase Elliott rolling off the grid in the 17th position. After just nine laps, the race was red-flagged due to rain. Once back underway, Elliott’s No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet showed strength. He battled for the lead and held the point for two laps before finishing the first stage in 11th place.
During the stage break, the NAPA Auto Parts crew made a fast stop for four tires and fuel. Elliott lined up inside the top 10 for the restart and was up to fourth when the caution came out on Lap 72. After topping off with fuel, the 29-year-old driver restarted in 10th and was working on a return to the front when the caution came out for debris. Once the race was back to green, Elliott was racing three-wide for the lead and was within striking distance to win the stage, ultimately taking the green-and-white checkered flag to end stage two in third.
Under the stage-ending caution, Elliott visited pit road for four fresh tires and fuel. In the chaos-filled final stage, the Dawsonville, Georgia, native was caught up in two multi-car incidents but avoided major damage in both. In the final overtime restart, another incident ensued, but Elliott weaved his way through to finish the race in 15th place.
Elliott leaves Daytona International Speedway tied for 10th in the points standings, just 18 markers behind the leader.
