Combustion engines require three elements to stay running: air, fuel and spark. Of course, there are numerous elements and parts in the combustion process, but without these elements operating at the right ratios and timing, you’re not going anywhere. Many modern vehicles use direct fuel injection for efficiency, but why? How does direct fuel injection work?
Combustion is a complicated process, but here’s a really pared-down explanation: Engines bring in air and fuel, which are combined and ignited on top of cylinders to force them down and create power. If you have too much or too little of any element, you’ve got problems and potentially no ignition. Therefore, it’s really important to make sure everything is coming in perfectly metered and when it should be. Take into consideration that demands for power vary each time you get behind the wheel, and that there are a multitude of other influencing factors to obtain precision, responsiveness and reliability.
Fuel delivery has come a long way. Carburetors that mixed air and fuel well outside of the intake manifold weren’t very fuel-efficient and needed adjustment often. After came throttle body injection, which is sometimes used today. Air and fuel are mixed in the intake manifold and sucked into the combustion chamber through the intake valve just before combustion. This design improved fuel efficiency because sensors could monitor the amount of incoming air and adjust fuel needs right before spark was added, and it was electronically controlled for responsiveness and accuracy.
How Does Direct Fuel Injection Work With an Injector Gadget?
Direct fuel injection is the latest development in fuel delivery, and is designed with the injectors spraying fuel directly into the combustion chamber, where it meets with air and ignites. It requires injectors that can handle the heat and pressure of the combustion chamber, all while maintaining a precise spray pattern for optimal atomization. You also need a strong and reliable pump to back those injectors up. The benefit is better fuel efficiency and performance, but there are a few trade-offs manufacturers are working through. Namely, directly injecting fuel into the chamber causes carbon buildup which can lead to clogged injectors and misfires. Also, that intake valve is used to getting a little lubrication as fuel passes by. When exposed to such high heats without it, valves can become brittle and even break off, causing engine failure.
This technology is evolving to be more efficient and less of a liability. Whether we perfect it before electric takes over is yet to be seen.
