Massey Steals the Show with Victory in Rip City

Mason Massey, the driver of the No. 19 BRUNT Workwear Chevrolet SS stole the show Saturday evening at Portland International Raceway, battling through a race filled with position changes and late-race drama to capture the victory in the Portland 112 for the ARCA Menards Series West (AMSW). Chaos began on the opening lap as the leaders missed the Turn 1 chicane, which immediately allowed Massey to vault to second. After falling back to sixth during the opening stint, the Bill McAnally Racing (BMR) driver worked his way forward and passed teammate Hailie Deegan on lap 19 to move into fourth.

Massey continued to battle near the front through the middle portion of the race, holding fourth through the halfway break before making his move for the lead on the lap-33 restart. Massey forced his way into the second position through the first chicane but quickly fell back to third. He continued to fight inside the top five through a series of late-race restarts, eventually restarting fifth with four laps remaining.

Massey moved to fourth through the opening corner on the final restart before falling back to fifth a few corners later. With the race coming down to the final lap, Massey remained within striking distance as the two cars ahead battled for the victory. Both cars ran off the track, allowing Massey to move from fourth to second before the leader made a mistake in the final corner, and the BRUNT Workwear Chevrolet SS slipped through in thrilling fashion.

Massey capitalized on the opportunity, taking the lead and crossing the finish line first to score a dramatic first road course victory in Rip City. It is Massey’s second win of the season, last winning in the season opener at Kevin Harvick’s Kern Raceway. This marks BMR’s 102nd AMSW victory and the fourth at a road course.

“It was a wild lap man,” Massey said after the victory. “I knew I had to get myself in a good spot on the final lap. In turn 10, I had to put some pressure on the 53. I missed the corner and then he missed it worse and I was able to get underneath him.
