Sweet Holds Points Lead with Two Outlaws Events Remaining
Four-time and defending World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion Brad Sweet secured another podium finish Saturday night at Lakeside Speedway after Friday’s race at 81 Speedway was canceled due to weather.
Sweet, the NAPA Auto Parts No. 49 team and fans were anticipating an exciting evening of sprint car racing at 81 Speedway in Wichita, Kansas, but heavy winds created hazardous conditions, and officials canceled the event with safety being the top priority. A planned, 62-person NAPA hospitality event at the track was canceled as well.
Saturday night’s race at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas, got off to a better start. Sweet made a resounding statement in qualifying with a blistering lap of 14.499 seconds, placing the NAPA No. 49 at the top of the charts. The NAPA driver then started on the pole of Heat Race 1, giving the team an opportunity to test their car’s set-up in clean air.
The Big Cat revealed his skill in heat-race competition, authoritatively leading from green to checkers and securing a spot in the Fast Pass Dash. Sweet drew the fourth starting spot and knew he needed to find a way to improve his starting position for the feature. When the dash went green, Sweet mounted a surge forward, showcasing his ability to navigate the field with precision. He was running in the third spot at the finish line, placing him third to start Saturday night’s feature.
Sweet again demonstrated his skill in the feature, challenging the first- and second-place runners several times during the 25-lap race. He maintained a steady and competitive pace to ultimately claim a third-place result, remarkably his 28th podium finish of the season. Sweet retains the points lead with only two events remaining to decide the championship.
