What does an Accelerator Pedal Sensor do for your vehicle?
The accelerator pedal sensor (APS) indicates the position of the accelerator on vehicle models with electronic throttle control. The APS is basically a throttle position sensor (TPS) with a pedal attached.
Where are these sensors located?
The accelerator pedal sensor is part of the accelerator pedal.
Will a malfunctioning accelerator pedal sensor illuminate the check engine light or affect vehicle operation?
Yes, a failing sensor can illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), and may cause the vehicle to have drivability problems such as poor acceleration or limited vehicle speed.
What are the common causes of failure?
Typically these sensors fail due to the constant contact of the movable wiper arm over the sensor element.
How to determine if these sensors are malfunctioning?
A quick way to check the sensor is to look for smooth voltage changes on the signal wire as the accelerator pedal sensor is being depressed and released. Note: most accelerator pedal sensors have multiple sensors in the same housing.
